Come Celebrate Geodiversity Day in Pond Inlet, Nunavut

27 September 2023

International Geodiversity Day is a worldwide celebration, bringing people together to promote the many aspects of our natural world.

Iqaluit, Nunavut (September 27, 2023) – The Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office (CNGO), Parks Canada, Government of Nunavut (GN), and Baffinland Iron Mines are coming together to celebrate the incredible geodiversity of Nunavut.

Geodiversity is all around you. It’s in all parts of nature that aren’t alive, from mountains, rocks, minerals and fossils, to rivers and lakes and spectacular landscapes.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, geologists and other experts from Parks Canada, the GN, CNGO and Baffinland will be holding an open house at the Pond Inlet Community Centre. It’s a chance to learn more about the many beautiful aspects of geodiversity and how we as a society study it and interact with it.

Please join us from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m., for a day of hands-on learning and knowledge sharing!

  • Oral presentations in Inuktitut and English
  • Rock and mineral collections and landscape photograph displays
  • Make your own pet rock for children
  • Free food, drinks and other refreshments · Geologists available to identify your rocks
  • Soapstone Carving introductory lesson
  • Door prizes

We will also be holding an amateur photo contest. Photos can be taken from a cell phone or handheld digital camera. Send us your best digital landscape photos of Nunavut, to Danny.Wright@canada.ca. Prizes will be handed out that day!
