For over 90 years, mining has been a key economic driver in the North — creating employment, business, and community-development opportunities for Northerners, and significant opportunities for northern Indigenous governments, corporations, communities, and peoples.
The NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines has been the voice of the northern mining and exploration industry since 1967. We promote the industry and the North to Northerners, Canadians, and the world, and we advise governments, regulators, investors, Indigenous groups, media, schools, and the public on the issues that matter to responsible mineral development.
Our primary objective is to encourage, assist, and stimulate the prosperous, orderly, and environmentally responsible growth of mining and mineral exploration in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Our Industry
One of the world's great mining regions
The North is one of the largest untapped mining areas in the world. Since the first mine opened in the early 1930s, mining has been the economic backbone of the NWT and Nunavut — providing training, employment, and business opportunities, and building lasting infrastructure across both territories.
Today the region is home to producing diamond, gold, iron ore, and rare-earth-element mines, which together are the largest private-sector contributors to each territory's economy.
