49th Annual (Virtual) Yellowknife Geoscience Forum a great Success!

Yellowknife, NT (November 26, 2021) Today concluded three full days of live presentations and panel discussions, supported by a host of technical presentations and posters as the 49th Annual Geoscience Forum drew to a close.

Between the live program event and a huge assemblage of on demand presentations, the Geoscience Forum provided a feast of approximately 90 geoscience presentations, panels and posters. Categories included:

  • Geoscience & Exploration
  • Mining and Advanced Project Updates
  • Critical Minerals
  • Indigenous participation in mining
  • Energy in Canada’s North
  • Environmental Monitoring & Research
  • Changing Permafrost Landscapes
  • Community Engagement & Education
  • Regulatory & Policy Updates

In addition, there were keynote presentations by PDAC on the future of Canada’s minerals industry, former Tahltan Chief Jerry Asp on Indigenous mining benefits, and analyst Byron King on the industrial revolution around critical minerals. Premier of the Northwest Territories, the Hon. Caroline Cochrane shared her government’s support for mineral resource development in a fireside chat, complemented by her “Minister of mines”, the Hon. Caroline Wawzonek, who also opened the Forum with welcoming comments. We thank all of our speakers and presenters, without whom we would have no Forum.

Our sincere thank you to our Forum and supporting partners – the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Government of the Northwest Territories, both through their Geological Survey and through the department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment; and also to our very many event sponsors, particularly Title Sponsor, Arctic Canadian Diamond Company. All their support made this event possible, despite COVID challenges. Special thanks are due too, to all the volunteers and workers who “sewed all the pieces into reality” to make it happen.

All of the presentations will be made available shortly to participants, and in the new year to the general public to enjoy.

The Northwest Territories and Nunavut association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG) provided awards to the following recipients:

  • Emily MacMillan with the Finnigan Award for on understanding craton formation and plate tectonics due to crustal recycling and deformation;
  • Turner Green for best poster presentation for his BSc. Work titled Mineralogy and Chemistry of Vanadium-bearing shales at the Van Property, Mackenzie Mountains, NWT; and
  • Allison Surrette for the best oral presentation for her Analysis of long-term stability of filtered tailings at the Cantung Mine, NWT, Canada.”
  • Hendrik Falck of the GNWT was also recognized for receiving the Geoscience Canada Award.
