3 June 2019

For the third year in a row, the Gahcho Kué Mine Rescue Team has won the Northwest Territories/Nunavut Regional Surface Mine Rescue Competition.
The 62nd Annual NWT/NU Mine Rescue Competition was held in Yellowknife on May 31 – June 1 with six teams competing – three from surface/open pit mining operations and three from underground operations.
Gahcho Kué captured the difficult Surface Obstacle, Surface Written, Surface Smoke, and Surface Practical Bench and had high scores in all the other events to repeat as Top Overall Surface Team.
The eight-member competition team is drawn from members of the 55-person Gahcho Kué Mine Emergency Response Team based at the mine. Three of the team members were competing for the first time.
“I am immensely proud of each of the members of the Gahcho Kué Mine Rescue team for another great performance and their third straight win, which is even more impressive considering almost half the team were competing in their first ever event,” said Gahcho Kué Mine General Manager Allan Rodel. “The commitment of the Gahcho Kué Mine Rescue Team to ongoing training and the professional execution of their duties is a great comfort to their colleagues and their colleagues’ families who put trust in this team every day at work to keep them safe.”
With the win, Gahcho Kué booked a spot in the biennial National Western Mine Rescue Competition in Fernie, B.C. from September 5-7,  2019.
