"Infrastructure to Unlock Northern Canada's Mining Potential", Chamber of Mines presentation to Canadian Energy & Mines Ministers, Iqaluit - August 13, 2018

22 August 2018

Executive Director of the Chamber of Mines, Tom Hoefer, shared the attached presentation with the annual meeting of Canadian Energy and Mines Ministers, held this year in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The presentation was delivered as part of a panel on northern infrastructure.

The presentation delivers a number of key messages on why Federal and provincial governments should support investment in infrastructure to support mineral development, including:

  • The North is a huge, underutilized, high mineral potential area of Canada (mining’s footprint is tiny)
  • Infrastructure is a major contributor to its underutilization
  • Canada was once more supportive, but for the last 40 years have not invested in mining infrastructure
  • We need a strong new vision for northern Canada
  • The time is right for a variety of reasons
