Mining opened up Canada’s North: Yellowknife, Dawson and Rankin began life as mining towns. The industry provides >35,000 person-years of employment each year, ~$4 Billion in taxes and royalties, and contributes >30% of northern GDP annually. In the provinces the GDP contribution is closer to 3%.

No one has a better understanding of the importance of mining to the North in a national context than Pierre Gratton. On September 18 he will share his insight into the future of mining at a Distinguished Speaker Series lunch at the Explorer Hotel.
Mr. Gratton was appointed President and CEO of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) on June 1, 2011. He is also Vice-President of the Raw Materials Committee of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD.

David Ramsay was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in November 2003. In October 2011 he was re-elected to a third consecutive term and appointed Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment. During his tenure as ITI Minister, the government introduced the successful Minerals Development Strategy and the Economic Opportunities Strategy to foster economic growth. In 2014, with the transfer of land and water authorities from the federal government he was appointed the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations in the NWT.
