Brief History of the Company:
Deton Cho Corporation was incorporated in 1988 ( Deton' cho means Great Eagle) to provide opportunities for our membership to participate in economic development. First incorporated as the Yellowknife Dene Band Corporation, it grew out of an economic development committee of the Yelloknives Band Council.
Deton' Cho Corporation is the economic arm of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. Owned by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation membership, the shares of the corporation are held in trust by the Chiefs and Council who are the Yellowknives Dene Government. The Yellowknives Dene Government developed the corporation to respond to the need to retain and enhance earnings generated in our community. It has 13 business subsidiaries through which it provides goods and services to their local community(s) and the mining industry. The Corporation identifies unique economic opportunities that will attract investors or appeal to our members. We explore niches in existing markets of both traditional and modern northern economies. We encourage economic collaborations with other Dene and First Nations communities.
Deton' Cho Corporation has significant, long term interest in a number of operating businesses, real estate properties and joint ventures. Deton' Cho ownership level ranges from a 100% interest in some companies to other level of participation. In most cases, Deton' Cho holds the controlling interest in the company it has invested in or shares the controlling interest with other Aboriginal development corporations.
Some Deton' Cho investments are now mature businesses that have an established track record of success. Others are in the early stages of development and will require skillful management and timely capital investment to achieve success in a competitive business environment.
